Is that a custom compiled version? Run sudo make uninstall from your Wine source code folder if it is, before anything.

Also, the instructions in your forum thread are old. All you need to do is enter this in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update


And then try installing wine1.2.
